Technical details of the project
The basis for the project presented was a complex solution with 30 Docker containers per gateway - both for open thread border routers and for AI inference.
The KontronGrid simplifies handling: in future, the distribution of the containers to the devices in the field will only require
manual upload to the system and the selection of target systems regardless of their location.
In addition, it is possible to test updates in small groups first and then install them on the relevant device in real time using the remoting function. An automated mass rollout can then take place.
Advantages for the customer
By only transferring the differences between two releases, the monthly data volume required per device is significantly reduced by using susietec®® KontronOS. Modifying the firmware of the OpenThread modules also ensures that the customer's sensors can be evaluated directly from a Docker container. No further configuration is required here.
To avoid unnecessary exposure, the susietec®® KontronOS security concept also only contains the components that are really necessary components: In the hardened state, the operating system only transfers delta updates that result from comparing the actual state in the device with the latest version on the server. In this way, we ensure that all devices contain exactly the same software version and that there are no more systems where partial updates are carried out too late or not at all.
This not only reduces the bandwidth of the integrated LTE modems and the roaming costs incurred,
but also problems and failures in the field that can be traced back to different conditions.
